From the President
I welcome everyone to the 2023 CDCBAA program year. This is CDCBAA’s 19th year and we, as an organization, are going strong. CDCBAA was created in 2005 as an association of consumer attorneys to provide educational and networking opportunities within our focused area of Law. We hold at least eight seminars a year that are tailor made and dedicated to our specific law practices.
Please mark your calendars:
On July 15th, our upcoming seminar will again be a split seminar with the topics of Witness Testimony – Testifying in Court and at the Meetings of Creditors from 11:00amto 12 noon with panelist David Lally and then the topic of Settlement Agreements from 12 noon to 1 pm with panelist John Tedford. Hale Antico will again serve as the moderator for both sessions.
In August, even though CDCBAA is usually dark for the summer break, we have a special add-on educational seminar scheduled for August 26th on the topic of Adversary Proceedings 101, Part II with Judge Johnson, which will again be moderated by our own Hale Antico. As background, when Judge Johnson prepared for the recent June 17th Seminar on the topic of Adversary Proceedings 101, he determined that he had a lot of additional information to provide to our members on this topic. He asked CDCBAA’s Board of Directors if he could secure a second date to present his additional information and the Board happily approved his request.
In September, due to the tremendous efforts of Jon Hayes, CDCBAA will be hosting the 8th Annual James T. King Symposium on September 23rd. The title of the program will be Communicating with Judges: Judges are People Too. Our esteemed speakers will be the Honorable John Owens, Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, the Honorable Robert Faris, United States Bankruptcy Judge – District of Hawaii and Chief Judge of the Bankruptcy Appellate Panel for the Ninth Circuit, Professor Daniel Bussell at the UCLA School of Law and our own Jon Hayes, BAP Law Clerk to the Honorable William Lafferty. This will certainly be a very lively and insightful seminar for our members and guests.
Special thanks go to Roksana Moradi-Brovia for all of her hard work in organizing and putting together our seminar presentations. She is an amazingly talented and well connected asset for CDCBAA. We are so grateful at all of her efforts and dedication to bringing valuable educational events on current topics to our membership that are so relatable to our field and practice of Law.
The Board has set the date and location for the upcoming 2023 Calvin Ashland Awards Dinner for Thursday, November 9th from 6 pm to 9 pm at the Sheraton Universal’s Skyview ballroom on the 21st floor. During this event, we shall honor David Goodrich as the 2023 Calvin Ashland TRUSTEE of the Year Award recipient for all his accomplishments and his many contributions to the practice of Consumer Bankruptcy Law and to the CDCBAA and its members. In addition, we shall be awarding the Founders Award to our friend and colleague, David Tilem, who was the one that first suggested and organized the creation of CDCBAA in 2004. We honor David’s many contributions to the betterment of our Consumer Bankruptcy practice and for the legacy that is CDCBAA.
My Co-President, Lucy Mavyan and I are extremely fortunate with having a very active, talented and motivated Board of Directors. Special thanks goes to the following Directors: Roksana Moradi Brovia, who again, organizes our phenomenal educational seminars and who is CDCBAA’s Representative to the Court’s honored Bar Advisory Board; our Vice President, Daniela Romero, who is CDCBAA’s Representative to the Debtors’ Assistance Project (“DAP”), Jeff Hagen, who is our CFO and judicially keeps our books and reports monthly to the Board, David Jacobs, who has accurately kept the Board’s Minutes for many years now, Dennis McGoldrick, our sacred Sergeant-at-Arms since 2010, who carefully monitors our meetings and listserv and Marcus Tiggs, our Chair of the Website Committee who has led CDCBAA through an amazing upgrade of our website. Deep gratitude goes to Hale Antico and Lucy Mavyan who moderate our monthly seminars. They bring their special touch to welcoming and guiding our panelists.
Their hard work and efforts are a credit to all of us in ensuring CDCBAA’s longevity and transparency. We owe a great debt of gratitude to them.
I am very proud at creation of our Mentoring Program for our members, spearheaded by Board members Daniela Romero, Alisa Admiral-Morales, Eliza Ghanooni and David Jacobs. The goal is the mutual sharing of the deep institutional knowledge and professional comradery of our practioners with less experienced attorneys within our Bankruptcy field. Our association has such a wealth of legal and practical knowledge and experience in the practice of Consumer Bankruptcy Law that it is a great honor to share this with newer practioners in our field. Please view cdcbaa’s website for further information as to
how to take part in our Mentoring Program.
Finally, I want to personally thank all those who attended CDCBAA's first ever Happy Hour event that was held on Wednesday, May 17th, at the Noe Bar and Restaurant located at the Omni Hotel in downtown Los Angeles. This, first of its kind event post pandemic, was organized by Eliza Ghanooni, Alisa Admiral-Morales and Sanaz Bereliani. The event started at 4 pm and even though it was scheduled to end at 6 pm -- did not end until 7:15 pm. A great time was had by all! We especially loved the personal and court stories regaled by Judge Robles and his law clerk. In the planning stages are other Happy Hours to be held in the Long Beach/South Beach area and in the San
Fernando Valley. Stay tuned for future details.
